Project case study
Karate Gi-Shaped Special Award: A Pilot Sample for a Japanese Tournament
A Japanese reseller wanted to test a new branded award line with one pilot piece: a special award shaped like a karate gi, to be presented at a tournament final in Japan before a fixed date.
At a glance
- Product: Layered wood special award, karate gi shape
- Quantity: 1 pilot sample
- Size: 250 W × 90 D × 280 H mm, about 0.7 kg
- Construction: 8 mm wood gi panel, 10 mm wood back panel, painted wood base
- Key processes: CNC cutting, UV printing, spray painting
- Status: Sample approved for shipment on 7 October 2026
The brief
The customer had a concept drawing for a karate gi-shaped award but no production drawing. They wanted one finished piece first, to judge the quality and to see how the whole ordering, production and delivery process works, before deciding on materials and shapes for a future range.
Turning a concept into a buildable award
We sent assembled and exploded views showing every layer, its thickness and the overall dimensions, so the customer could approve the construction rather than just a picture:
- Gi panel: 8 mm wood with UV-printed collar, belt and a word on the chest.
- Back panel: 10 mm wood, sprayed black, with UV-printed accent colours.
- Base: black-painted wood carrying the customer's logo and the award wording.
An acrylic back panel had been discussed first. For the pilot we proposed painted wood instead, and showed that the collar and belt would be flat prints with shading for depth rather than separate raised parts. The customer accepted both points for the pilot.
Fitting a deadline across a holiday
Timing was tight: China's Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays fell between approval and the event. We quoted around 4–5 working days for the sample and 4–5 working days for express delivery, and started the sample immediately on approval so it could reach the customer before their deadline.
Result
We sent front, rear, side, angled and base close-up photographs of the finished award for approval before packing. The customer approved the sample for shipment, said it looked better than they expected, and singled out the base. The next step is to develop shapes, materials and options for a production version of the range.
Questions buyers ask about projects like this
Can you make a single custom award as a pilot before a production order?
Yes. Minimum order is 1 piece. A pilot lets you check the finished quality and the full ordering and delivery process before you commit to a production quantity.
Can you make a trophy in a custom shape, such as a karate gi?
Yes. Send a sketch or concept; we turn it into assembled and exploded views with layers, thicknesses and dimensions for your approval before production.
Is UV printing on wood a good alternative to separate raised parts?
For pilots and small runs it often is. Flat UV-printed details with shading can suggest depth at lower cost; raised or separate parts can be added in a later version if needed.
